That's Illumination Rock. Its base is at 9,300 feet. The second year we were here, I took Christopher on a climb to the saddle on the left overlooking the absolutely spectacular Reid Glacier. The only climbing gear we had was my ice axe and my hand, which held Christopher's 9 year old hand. He never once complained about the effort of making the 3,400 foot climb from Timberline Lodge. I asked him later if he got tired and he said he got so exhausted he thought he would die, but he didn't complain at all because he was burning to see the view on the Illumination Rock saddle. The view is definitely worth "almost dying" for. But it's too early in the year to get a glimpse of the spectacular crevasses on the glacier. They're almost all still covered by last winter's snow. By September, all the crevasses will be gloriously uncovered. That's when we hiked it, so we saw it at its best.
