Mottled tortoise beetle (Deloyala guttata)

Found on the underside of the nightshade plant (Solanum dulcamara). Several species of tortoise beetles are found on this plant as well as on morning glory plants. They are such unique little creatures and I'm fascinated by them. In the tropics there are some outstandingly beautiful ones, but ours are pretty neat too!

Interesting, thanks for providing the very interesting information on these guys! There's one spot at Hurdman Park where I've seen both Golden and Mottled Tortoise Beetles in the last few years. There is lots of nightshade and bindweed in the area, which could explain why I've had good luck finding them there!

Now that's really cool! It almost looks man-made!

Microscopic! Apparently nightshade is not poisonous to this fellow. V

I have to admit it's sort of cute, although not sure I would want to hold it ;-). Great capture, Christine. V.
