The day started out with a visit to Taku Bay. The claim to fame here is a cannery which burned in the 1930s. There were lots of pilings left and quite a bit of rusted machinery. There were also some structures which seemed to be in use some time recently. We started the day with a walk ashore which was interesting. We took lots of artsy fartsy pictures amongst the ruins. The other thing we could do was to go kayaking, which of course we did. It was lots of fun. Bright sunshine and no wind. We looped around the bay and enjoyed the excursion. Then it was all aboard as we headed to Tracy Arm.

Tracy Arm is a fjord which is very long. There are two glaciers at the top of it, North and South Sawyer Glacier. It was interesting to see all the ice bergs, most of them small, along the way. The larger ones had the bright blue color which is caused by glacial compression of the ice. Very pretty. As we got up toward the top of the fjord, the crew launched the small boat and we went cruising around amongst the ice bergs and went up close and personal to a waterfall. The captain took the boat very close to the face of North Sawyer Glacier. There wasn't too much calving going on, but we did see a couple events and had some pretty good bangs. On the way out of Tracy Arm we saw some whales and chased them around for a while. One thing I found interesting about the crew of this boat is that they all are excited to see whales and watch them when their duties (and sleep cycle) permit.
