Tunnels are formed in the lava. When the lava is molten, outer edges cool and form a shell. When the interior is on a slope and the lava has drained away, a tunnel has resulted. When at sea-level, they sometimes create unusual links between the sea and inland pools which are cut at low tide. Creatures are trapped temporarily in the pools, sharks and turtles among them.
