Pony Express Stone Cabin.

Whoa....What does a Pony Express photo have to do with a wild horses gallery?

Well, here we go:

This old Pony Express station cabin was rebuilt from the same stone on the same site as the original Simpson's Springs station used during the legendary Pony Express days of the mid 1860's. It was erected by the CCC during the Depression days.

And, this structure stands right in the middle of the desert where images in this gallery were taken. (There is an information kiosk at this site with an image from this gallery that was shot a hundred yards away).

Wild horses were very abundant during the days of the Old West. Some obviously were descendants from the Spanish Explorers that escaped or were turned loose. Indian tribes that raided and stole horses from colonial California in the 1830's and 1840's drove the herds through this area, losing many along the way.

There were many more wild horses running free in the 1800's in the West than there are now. Wild mustangs were caught and sold to the Army, used as cow ponies and....of course, they were a major source of the tough horses that the Pony Express needed to carry the mail through the untamed West.

After the Pony Express ended, I think that many of the horses used along the trail were simply turned back out into the wild.

Yes. That is why this photo pops up in this gallery.
