Sheldon Church, located in Beaufort County, South Carolina, was constructed
1745 to 1753. Burned by the British, it was rebuilt in 1785 and all but
the remaining walls and columns were destroyed during the Civil War.
Popular lore says the General Sherman's army burned it, another that
locals stripped materials from the interior for reconstruction of homes
burned by Sherman.
