Pico do Arieiro, at 1,818 m high (5965 feet), is Madeira island's third highest peak. The footpath northwards towards Pico Ruivo is an important tourist attraction, with a daily average of 1000 tourists trekking on it.
There is easy road access to the summit, with a large car park, a restaurant and souvenir shop. In 2011, an Air Defence Radar Station was built at the top of the mountain near the tourist facilities.

In Nord-Süd-Richtung findet man einen Gebirgszug mit drei Gipfeln, die jeweils über 1.800 m hoch sind: Im Norden steht der Pico Ruivo (Rothaarspitze), der mit 1861 m der höchste Berg der Insel ist; Weiter südlich steht der Pico das Torres (Spitze der Türme), der mit 1851 m Höhe fast an den Pico Ruivo heranreicht und damit der zweithöchste Berg der Insel ist; Noch weiter südlich findet man den Pico do Arieiro, mit 1818 m dritthöchster Berg der Insel.
