After the country's turbulent long history, three cities were combined to form its capital,
Budapest, in 1873. Plans were shortly put in place create a building to house Hungary's Parliament on the banks of the Danube. Construction of this immense, beautiful Gothic style building was started in 1885 and completed in 1904. A huge project, the construction involved around a thousand workers, 40 million bricks, half a million precious stones, 88 lbs of gold and more than half a million carved ornamental stones. During the communist era a red star was placed on the top of its dome, but was taken down in 1990.
