Petrified Forest

These petrified logs were growing in a tropical climate 225 million years ago. Geologists believe they were probably knocked down by a sudden impact such as a volcanic eruption, buried in a swamp, and then covered with layers of volcanic ash. Over millennia the swamp became a mountain with the logs buried in layers of rock. As the soft layers erode from the surrounding hills, the petrified logs tumble to the valley floor. Amazing!
