Carretera Austral (CH-7)
was built to connect isolated communities in the south.
It was constructed by the Chilean Army’s Engineering
Command (over 10,000 soldiers worked on building it),
and was opened to traffic in 1988. The road starts in
Puerto Montt and runs to Villa O’Higgins, about 1,240
kilometres away (to the south), in the Aysen Region.
