The old SP follows a ledge on the south side of Donner Lake, up up and away from lake level, to attain Donner Summit. Amtrak 5 is exiting Shed 47 in this shot. Shed 47 used to be there to cover the double crossovers inside it, and keep the railroad fluid during the winter snows. However, the railroad west (to the right) of Shed 47 is now single track thanks to forward-thinking management in the early 90's... read that with appropriate sarcasm.
