Chinese Benevolent Society

The earliest social organizations of Chinese immigrants in America had their origins in the 1850s in San Francisco.
They were created to accommodate the needs of the immigrants, mostly men, in a strange and sometimes hostile environment.
The first associations were based on areas of origin, the villages and the districts.

District associations (Hut Guan) were made up of immigrants who had a common dialect and originated from the same area.
As the community became established some wives were brought over and family associations based on a common surname were established.
People with the same surname tended to congregate in the same cities.
For example, those with the surname of Hom were the predominant families in early San Diego.

What a unique and wonderful style of architecture. Like Chinese and Victorian mixed. Very nice to see it in good health. My town of Sugar Land is predominant Asian, which surprises a lot of people. Houston has a huge population of Asians too. In fact, in some areas around Houston, the street signs are in Chinese and English. Not what many expect when thinking about Texans. V

Many Chinese came to my home town of Bendigo in Victoria during the gold rush of the 1800's also and have a large presence to this day.

ace shot...this is a welcoming exterior next to the fenced surrounds...many Chinese people also came to Vancouver during the late 19th century, and ensuing waves of immigrants found a warm welcome here...currently their descendants, and lots of recent arrivals, play a major role in the community..
