Oyster House, New Orleans, Louisiana, 2014

These patrons were seated within a doorway open to the street. I photographed them from a distance, using a 230mm telephoto focal length. Behind them, diners can be seen reflected in a large mirror, adding a theatrical ambiance to the scene. The gestures of the man at left dominate the image – he holds a phone in one hand, making us wonder if he is talking to the fellow opposite him or if he is speaking simultaneously with someone else.

The color changes in the reflection, because the scene is illuminated by the incandescent overhead bulb, while the people in the foreground are seated outside and illuminated by natural light. It does created a multi-dimensional effect.

The mirrored image seems to me to be almost like a painted scene - the reality and the reflection.

Thanks for pointing out the potential reflection, Rose. I see now that it could be a possibility. We both owe Dave Wyman's imagery a vote of thanks here.

Yes, Phil. It's a visual delight! I begin by looking at the older gentleman on the right in the foreground, then I look at the man behind him - he's wearing a dark blue shirt and has black framed glasses; he's sitting under the lamp, and he's looking to his left. His reflection appears in the upper left, and his right hand is prominent. I guess I've become accustomed to looking for these elements from viewing so many of Dave's reflection images.

I like the generational aspect as well, Rose. I am not quite sure who is repeated twice here, unless you are referring to the fellow sitting just behind the older gentleman. Do you think that the gesturing figure reflected in the mirror at upper left is the same person?

I like the sense of generations here. And the man in the blue shirt who appears twice is striking. The lamp over the heads can symbolize the light of ideas. V
