Funeral Celebration
Komasi
Funeral celebrations in Ghana are important, often lavish, social events. They are held some time after burial as a separate and joyous event. We were privileged, among hundreds of friends and relatives, to attend a celebration for the death of a prominent woman. We were warmly received by some family members, some of whom had relatives living or studying in the US.
Red and black colors dominated the scene. Family members dressed in red; relatives and friends dressed in black. Among the attendees were two Ashanti kings and other dignitaries who were announced over a massive PA system as they entered the grounds.
