Unlike the large, organised cockfight I saw in a stadium, this one took place in a small ring with limited barriers between cocks and spectators. A number of people watched from within the ring. When the cocks came towards them they got out of the way in a hurry: the spurs are dangerous.

(Photographic note: my camera is manual focus only. 28mm lens in this case. Not so much light. ISO640. Tried to get the balance between shutter speed and DoF, given that I was having to focus in a hurry on small bodies moving fast around the ring. With the benefit of hindsight I should have prioritised a faster shutter speed - maybe by moving up to ISO1250 - because the cocks move so fast that they're just a blur. A flash used intelligently would of course have been one solution, but my camera has no built-in flash; I tend not to carry a flash; I don't know how to use one intelligently; and anyway in the stadium they said that photos were ok, but no flashes).
