The church of Sant Joan de Fàbregues and its castle are documented from the year 968. The church, which was the main church of the municipality, is located about 3 km from the castle. In the 12th century, the town grew around the castle of Rupit. Noble families built a new church, Sant Miquel, where they had built their houses. St. Joan de Fàbregues Romanesque building located 810m high and beside the track from Rupit to Vilanova de Sau, it is the nicest Romanesque building of the region. During the earthquakes (1427) it was greatly damaged. In 1978 it was acquired by the regional government of Barcelona LA DIPUTACIÓ de BARCELONA which restored the building. The church of Rupit had been governed by the parish of St. Joan de Fàbregues during many years until 1878, when Rupit achieved the condition of parish.
