Here is a tale of all things in a day that have gone horribly wrong. I was in a meeting today that wouldn't end. It went on and on and on and on and ON… Some people with great intentions need to learn about talking less and listening more. I finally escaped from this meeting with moments to spare to make my flight. As I am arriving at the airport I get the dreaded text flight status notification. "Unfortunately your flight is cancelled so please call 1-800-IFLYSWA to rebook your flight". This text message was the last thing I was expecting.
I called the great people at 1-800-IFLYSWA and was promptly notified this time by a lovely lady named "kadfhksdsfkljh" that all flights for the remainder of the day were unfortunately being stopped at Midway. I can't get you out till 4 PM tomorrow. (24 hours away). No buenos!

Taking stock of my situation and being in a very bad spot as I am hosting more meetings in another city at exactly 9 AM I have to get home. Horse and buggy, hover craft, Uhaul, Train, Unicycle, whatever. I gotta get home and then onto my next set of meetings on Friday morning.

I go to the rental car place and ask to change my car reservation to instead drop it off at the airport in Cleveland. To my utter amazement they said sure, it'll be a $800 drop charge to do this due to inclement weather. Eight Hundred Dollars? Are you kidding me!!!! "Gouging thieving MF'ers" is the exact thought that came to mine at this moment. In seconds I was free of the unscrupulous "Budget" rental car agency and their very uncomfortable Mazda POS subcompact and left to ponder my plight. After a few minutes on the phone and a few clicks in my companies travel system I ended up renting a one way rent a wreck to Cleveland for the "Thrifty" price of less than 250 bucks. Steep for a rent car but I was homeless and in need of transportation…

While I thought my ordeal was over? I had just begun. I battled Chicago style gang warfare driving at rush hour on the Dan Ryan and upon clearing that insanity and thinking I was home free on the Indiana Tollway I got this- Fog. Soupy- wet- can't see shit and have to drive 20 MPH in a 70 zone praying the entire time you see the car in front of you stopping to avoid certain death in this mess.

I am a pretty fearless driver but 200 miles in this has left me appreciating this glass of Jack Daniels I am sipping on right now.

Glad you made it home safe and sound. Sounds like an awful day.

S**tful story, great photo (in the sense that it would be nicely mood-setting as the cover of Stephen King's next novel, "The Rental"), and thankfully a happy ending.
Even without inclement weather the different depot drop charge is obscene. When I moved down here I rented a Thrifty van from a Sydney suburb, then dropping it back to the Illawarra base would have set me back a few hundred. Cheaper to rent the thing overnight and drop it back to Sydney the next day. And it had Victorian plates, so I don't think it was romantically attached to the Sydney depot that I rented it from.
Next time try the unicycle. It'd make a great talking point for starting the Friday meeting.
