This snowy was perched on a pole at a busy intersection during rush hour traffic. Suddenly its attention focussed down. My friend Jeannine originally thought the owl was zeroing in on her as she trained her camera on it. However, I noticed a small animal crossing from the owl-side of the road to ours.
Surprisingly, not only did it make it across the road without becoming road kill but it ran all around Jeannine's boots. Stubbornly, Jeannine kept her focus on the owl, not even looking down when I alerted her to the 'mouse' around her boots. Finally, she looked down and we burst into laughter as the poor shrew ran frantically along the snowbank looking for a place to hide.
In the end the owl never swooped down and the shrew found safety in the snow.
