To make the print size independent of the negative size, an enlarger is used. The print is
then exposed by light projected through the negative where the size and focus can be adjusted,
similar to a slide projector. The exposure is adjusted by the lens aperture and by the length
of the exposure. A mechanical or electrical timer may be used to control the exposure duration.
