Ardvreck Castle on Loch Assynt

Sunrise might be overdoing it here this morning. After the rain we briefly got glimpse of sunlight the hit the peninsula/Island. The sky was certainly interesting and for a short while it all went on behind us - more to follow. Anyway the castle was built by the MacLeods of Assynt towards the end of the fifteenth century, Ardvreck was originally a simple rectangular structure, but over the years it was improved with the addition of a tower and vaulted cellars. The MacLeods lost ownership of the castle following a two week long siege by the MacKenzies of Wester Ross in 1672. The castle was struck by lightning in 1795 and much of the building was destroyed.

The MacLeods must haver been a hardly lot - looks a bleak and barren island although obviously offering a good viewpoint.
Beautiful light on this wild landscape.

the Macleods must have treasured their privacy, and security too...cracking scene..
