IMG_1315 Siena Cathedral Partial Nave Wall .jpg

This view shows one wall of the Cathedral's nave wall that was never completed.
Construction was stopped when the Plague descimated Siena and its great wealth. Two of the great
arches of the wall can be seen, along with the rest of the wall behind the current construction scaffolding
and the original front entrance.
The completed left transept of the original church is now the nave, which gives the visitor a glimpse of how
immense the original structure was to have been , had it been completed as planned.

In the unfinished portion of the existing wall of the unfinished original nave, the red brick structure houses a small museum with some important sculpture,
and upstairs the glory of the Cathedral, Duccio's great altarpiece the "Maesta", or "Virgin in Majesty" (1308-11), surrounded by a choir of
saints and angels, beautifully displayed and dramatically lit in a darkened room
Around the walls of the room are numerous predella panels removed
from the lower part of the altarpiece showing scenes from the Life of Christ.
Other panels from the back of the altarpiece show scenes of Christ's Passion.

Don't miss this magnificent work of art if you are ever in Siena!
