Progress?

These massive cranes dominate the skyline as work continues on the demolition of Dundalk's first shopping centre, built 40 years ago, and the construction of a new Tesco superstore.
When the shopping centre, which was only the second fully enclosed shopping mall in the country opened, most of the shops were owned by local businesses.
Over the years, some of these shops moved to newer shopping centres while others simply went out of business.
The building of a massive new Tesco is likely to further impact on the town's independent retailers who are already struggling to survive.

Sad reality, it's happening all over. Really miss the small shops that bring uniqueness to the marketplace. V

A huge shame but a sign of the times! The trouble is we have to support the local shops to survive and when we are rushing around its too easy to go for the easy option when you have transport.

One day Tesco will rule the world! They have put most of our local shops out of business - such a shame. However it is also true that that the small shops would still be here if we all used them. v

It saddens me greatly to see the big mega stores taking over cities and towns. The US is filled with them and Lynn is correct ~ nothing is unique from state to state. :( Just more Chinese crap for sale...

Excellent silhouetted capture of the construction, and while a Tesco will probably be convenient for shoppers, the effect can't be good for local retailers. V.

It's too bad...the independent merchants have so much to offer. V

It has happened in all our suburbs too. Small shops are closing all the time. Very sad, but what Philip says is true.

More mega stores. And so many! Now, I see the same store chains in every town, in every state. Nothing unique anymore... just more of the same. Sucks.

The cool tones add to the winter starkness of this image. It sounds like Tesco is somewhat similar to Walmart and Costco here in the US.

Everywhere the same. As we say 'Big fish eats the small one'. Excellent capture though, with a fine sky. v

Interesting to see your progress.

We have a newish Tesco store which has resulted in 7 empty shops in the High Street and a success story in that Great Torrington fought the idea of an out of town Tescos and WON! It really is a case of "What price progress" these days!

Ah yes - but every little helps... we complain when the little shops go, but we're not prepared to pay for them.

It looks huge and impressive being lowered from the sky. I know how these new stores destroy old business. This image makes it look like a monster from the sky come to crush everything. V.
