7th December 2013 - jumping into my grave

Honestly! I get up from my seat on the sofa to go and put on a loaf of bread and what happens? A certain spoilt little madam called Lola jumps into the nice warm space and makes herself comfortable.

It’s Saturday night and (frankly much the same as every night in the Mingay household), we’re home and watching the goggle box. Saturday night is a bit different in as much as we have treats on a Saturday – a glass or two of wine, an episode of “Mad Men” and, later on, a Sally Lockhart mystery with a Doctor Who and a Doctor Who’s assistant playing lead roles.

We’ve got a bit hooked on Mad Men although we came into it late. We kept hearing how good it was but they’re now showing series 4 or 5 or something on our telly so we bought a second-hand copy of series 1 on DVD and we’re rationing ourselves to two episodes a week, one on Saturday and the other on Sunday night. We started this as a kick against the crap scheduling of the TV companies who seem to believe that only sad old gits stay home on Saturday night and watch the telly so there is an endless spewing out of even worse drivel than we get on weekdays. When we’ve watched the lot we’ll sell it for what we paid for it hopefully and buy series 2! We were discussing the programme and decided that despite really enjoying it, we loathed every single character in it…even the ones we are supposed to feel sorry for like the downtrodden wife of Don. It’s a scary slice of dramatised social history.

So, whether we qualify as sad old gits or not, we like our evening with a glass of wine and the dogs curled up beside us but it’s a bit rich when they jump into our place so quickly!

Oh and the tumblers for wine - a much better idea than wine glasses, a lower centre of gravity so it's less easy to knock them over and they fit into the dishwasher better.
