Located at the heart of the old town, the co-cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda overlooks the Market Place (Plaza del Mercado) and sits alongside the historic street of Calle Portales.
The first records for a catholic church on this site date back to the twelth century.
A circular or polygonal roman church occupied the site, hence the nickname 'La Redonda' - 'the round'.
In 1453 Santa María de la Redonda gained the status of 'collegiate church' and merged with San Martín de Albelda Church. It was rebuilt in the sixteenth century and described as "destinguished" by Pope Benedict XIII in 1727.In 1959 Santa María de la Redonda was upgraded to Cathedral status.
The main entrance facing the market square is flanked by two giant baroque towers, commonly referred to as "the twins."
