Spotted this juvenile on the High Pines peninsula and later, somewhat closer, on one of the poles in the HP marsh where I could get this long-lens shot from the car. The gloomy weather made for a dark documentation photo of the first very dark plumaged bird of the season. Note how the dark feathering on the top of the head continues unbroken down the nape to the back as well as the very dark chest and underparts; this is almost certainly, therefore, a juvenile.
Snowy Owls have been reported all across Massachusetts the last couple of weeks. My first was on 11/22 http://www.pbase.com/rickbowes/image/153483083) and then two more on 11/30 http://www.pbase.com/rickbowes/20131130_snowys). The four birds are distinguishable as individuals by their markings.
As in the case of the other birds, there is no color marking on the head or nape of this individual to suggest that it is a bird relocated from Logan Airport
