Raffles Hotel, is a
well known landmark in the Republic of Singapore, a “sovereign
city-state”, which is located on an island just off the southern tip
of the Malay Peninsula. In 1819 Thomas Stamford Raffles signed
a treaty on behalf of the British East India Company (to develop
the southern part of the island as a trading post), then, in 1824,
the entire island became a British “possession”. Raffles Hotel was
designed by, Regent Alfred John Bidwell and was completed in 1899.
