There are five gates to enter Angkor Thom all looking similar to this one. A citizen of the Khmer Empire entering any of the gates for the first time in the 12th century c.e. must have been impressed and intimidated by the size of it - perhaps the idea behind the massive size of each gate.
Angkor Thom ("Great City") was the walled and fortified capital city of the last Khmer empire. The face on the gate may be (no one knows for sure) that of the late 12th century c.e. King Jayavarman VII who built Angkor Thom.
This gate also was in a scene in the movie "Tomb Raider" with Angelena Jolie.
