A cutler in Thiers, in the Auvergne, begins to shape a knife from a bar of steel.
Thiers is one of the main centres for cutlery in France, turning out ordinary tableware but also every other kind of edged steel imaginable, from penknives to sabres.
Taken on a cycling holiday years ago.
