For many years I was puzzled by the name of Ecclesmachan,
a small village about 2 or 3 miles from my home in West Lothian.
I later learned that Mary, Queen of Scots and her French court
often worshipped at the village's Church of St Machan when
in residence at nearby Linlithgow Palace.
The church's French title 'L'Eglise de St Machan' was mispronounced
as Ecclesmachan by the locals and the name survives to this day!
