You don't do a lot of portraits, probably for the same reason that I don't; it's hard not to have this feeling which fluctuates between a concern about violating their privacy, and the fact that documenting the people of our times is as important as documenting the places. The rule of thumb that I try to work with if I do candid shots is "don't make them look stupid or ugly". I think you've got that one nailed here. From the clothes he doesn't look like he's the most prosperous resident of Rochester but he still has an aura of dignity about him.
