a bell

most bells date from the C18th± and have been more recently repaired; some have more elaborate inscriptions. They are suspended from a 'headstock', visible in the previous image, allowing periodic lowering for repair of either bell or frame. Some frames have been replaced with steel.
When I used to have responsibility for some of these towers, I would have to imagine what it was like up there with upto 12 bells going through the 'changes'…it seemed it would generate far more stress than masonry could stand, but fortunately there were specialists to rely on who knew otherwise and at most I had to organise the repair of evidently decayed main beams.

Great perspective of this old timer...I imagine there would be a lot of stress with all those bells going...V
