King Eider (Somateria spectabilis)

Andrew Haydon Park IBA, Ottawa

Best viewed in 'Original size' see below. @ 3.30pm the eider was 10 feet from the rocks, just offshore on Lac Deschenes IBA. Part of a small influx of four birds today. James Bay must be freezing over!
One local birder mentioned it was a 'who's who of Ottawa Birders today!
First record in Ottawa for twenty years?

Important Bird Areas

IBAs contain threatened species, endemic species, species representative of a biome or highly exceptional concentrations of birds. As a network, IBAs are strategic building blocks for global conservation. For birds, they are literally the most important places on earth.

Nature Canada, with co-partner Bird Studies Canada, delivers BirdLife International’s Important Bird Areas program in Canada. We aim to identify, monitor and protect a global network of IBAs for the conservation of the world’s birds and other biodiversity.

Lovely shot of her richly coloured plumage. A treat for us to see this rarity.
