Mud and rock slides continually threaten the Panama Canal. The grade has never reached what engineers call the "angle of repose", so in the rainy season the super saturated earth gives way to gravity from time to time. Work is continuous to reduce the grade and terrace the sides to avert slides. You can see from the postion of the bouys that the right side of the channel is shallow.
