The top of El Capitan is 2900 ft/900 m above the valley floor. . . .

Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia Clothing, was one of the first to climb
the North America wall of El Cap in 1964. He returned the following year to climb
the Muir Wall of El Cap, and was responsible for the design of a number of pieces
of climbing gear that are less destructive than the old-style steel pitons.
