Fondée au Xème siècle par les Rajhpoutes, Gwalior devient une place prépondérante sous le règne du raja Man Singh (1486-1515). Après sa mort, les moghols s’emparèrent de la citadelle, puis ce fut au clan des Marathes de ravir la place forte aux musulmans
en 1754.
En 1857, lors de la révolte des Cipayes contre les troupes britanniques la femme du Rajah de Jhansi (ville voisine) pris la tête des troupes rebelles. Défaite par les Anglais elle se réfugia à Gwalior. Lors de l’assaut de la citadelle, habillée en homme elle s’élança à cheval contre l’ennemi et périt, devenant une héroïne de l’indépendance indienne.

Founded in the tenth century by the Rajputs, Gwalior became a prominent place during the reign of Raja Man ​Singh (1486-1515). After his death, the Mughals occupied the citadel, then it was the Maratha clan which defeated the Muslims in 1754.
In 1857, during the Indian Mutiny against British troops the wife of Rajah of Jhansi (nearby town) took the head of the rebel troops. Defeat by the English she fled to Gwalior. During the assault on the citadel, dressed as a man she rushed on horseback against the enemy and died, becoming a hero of Indian independence.
