As I walked in the marsh south of High Pines a Herring Gull in front of me suddenly became very agitated flying up with a rapid wingbeat heading out over the bay, and I assumed one of the Peregrines present for the last 10 days must be nearby. Not so; when I looked up, I watched a Short-eared Owl go right over my head! It headed west out over the Bay toward Clark's Island where two Herring Gulls intercepted it and began to harass it http://www.pbase.com/rickbowes/image/152755207). The Owl was unfazed, rose up quite high, and the gulls did not give chase. The Owl turned southeast toward Plum Hills and then back northward, and as it passed the 3rd crossover it descended to about 50 ft and glided back over the water toward the marsh. Shortly after it got back over land, it suddenly dropped into (or behind) the tall grass and out of sight. I waited for a few minutes hoping it would rise up out of the grasses but no luck. I had only my zoom Powershot pocket camera with me, but was still able to get a couple of documentation shots including this one.
