We arrived at Richard and Christiane's house yesterday for a long weekend stay. It is always fun visiting them in Kennett Square, PA. This part of the US is quite different from Houston. Anyway, we met our grad school friend Carl and his wife Rene at the Hagley Museum for a nice tour. This is the location of the original DuPont powder works (1806) on the banks fo the Brandywine River in Delaware. The original home and buildings of the living area are open for visitation. What is really neat, however, is the restored powder mill and machine shop. They have an operational water turbine that turns the wheels in one of the many powder mills that are there. They also have an original machine shop with all sorts of machines in actual working condition. Todays photo shows the guide loading up a black powder tester for a demonstration. He fired it off to the crowd's wonder and amazement. We returned to Rich and Christiane's place for a great dinner of ravioli casserole. |
