We started out the day at Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site. Today's photo is of the home of his in-laws called White Haven. Grant met his future wife here when he was posted to Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis right after he graduated from West Point. The video narrative was interesting because it was a good summary of Grant's life. I had always been under the impression that he was from Galena, Illinois, but he is really from Ohio. After spending some time here we went across the street to Grant's Farm, which is a park owned and operated by Anheuser Busch. It reminded nme of the old Busch Gardens. You ride a tram through the property and see all kinds of interesting critters. Then you get deposited at a place where there are critters to feed and pet and shows to watch. We watched the bird show and the elephant show. They were fun. The highlight of visit is the hospitality area where they have, you guessed it, free beer! We had a Stella and some others and we tried a Michelob Ultra. It was awful. Low calorie means no flavor. The final event of the day was visiting a Frank Lloyd Wright house in southwest St. Louis. It was interesting. The guide was very good and we really enjoyed the whole thing. On the way back to the hotel we stopped at Walmart and got some salads for dinner. Good day for sure. |
