Red-cross stink bug (Elasmostethus cruciatus), adult and nymph

Larose Forest. These were two of many of these insects found on alder shrubs along the trail. The adults must have recently transformed from nymphs to adults as there were so many of both stages, as well as a very bright green adult without the full red "cross". Despite their name they are not really stinkbugs, but in a closely related group. These stinkbugs will overwinter as adults underneath leaf litter on the forest floor.
