Meaningless grade crossing at Day Canyon

view map

Southwest of Moab, Union Pacific's Cane Creek Branch follows Potash Road (SR 279) for a few miles. Where the road passes the mouth of Day Canyon, a grade crossing exists for a dirt side road that has not seen any traffic for years, perhaps decades. Beyond the gates is a steep, brushy drop-off.

The dirt road, when built, was planned as a route from Potash to the mesa above, but was abandoned when the road in Long Canyon was built. Portions of the road are still visible higher in the canyon, but the section just beyond this grade crossing no longer exists, probably washed away by stream action.

This grade crossing survived all that, but why is a mystery. Perhaps the railroad kept it as a point of access for hi-railers. Another photo, taken in mid-2011, shows the track with the grade crossing removed.
