The sea and the river fountain flank the Obelisk (Fontaine des MERs or the fleuves). The square is dedicated to the spirit of the French shipping on the rivers and seas this. This corresponds with the task of a Gabriel building, the Navy Department, which was used first for the garde-MEUBLE of the King. Both wells were inaugurated on May 1, 1840 the prefect Rambuteau. The Northern fountain represents the River with seated figures representing father Rhine, Rhône wine - and the harvest; the southern, Seine facing fountain the maritime on Mediterranean and the Atlantic represents, however, together with the fishing.
