This wide field photo of the Milky Way was captured from an observing location in southern
Australia in October as it was in the western sky. What we are capturing here of course is a
sideways view looking through the thick band of stars that forms our own galaxy. Looking
towards the bright star cloud just of centre of the photo is looking towards the centre of
our galaxy. Astronomers believe that there is a large black hole in this region which forms
the centre of rotation of our galaxy.
