AFL a.k.a. Australian Rules Football a.k.a. Aussie Rules is perhaps not as much a de facto religion in the other states as it is in its home state of Victoria, but it comes close. Essentially the country is divided between NSW and Queensland (where, for reasons that remain inexplicable to me, Rugby League is the most significant football code), and the other four states where Aussie Rules is.
It was a beautiful Fremantle morning. Bright, sunny, cool to warm. Fremantle is mostly dead on the early part of Sunday mornings but we did (finally) find a café named Il Cibo to have breakfast at and if you ever find yourself in Fremantle, I suggest that you do as well. Later we went on to the Fremantle markets, which are much like any other markets you'll find; worth a look if you have the time, but go in without expectations. From there we went on to the old Fremantle Gaol but en route we passed by the football ground. Here we see a statue of two Aussie Rules players (located on the roundabout just outside the football ground) flying high over the church in the background courtesy of a little trick in perspective... and that pretty much tells you all you need to know about Sundays in "Freo".
(Yes, I could have cropped this tighter, but given that both the players and the church aspire to and appear to be reaching toward the heavens I thought it appropriate to leave the amount of sky in place that I did.)
