Site of Bellemont Tornado Outbreak

Flagstaff, AZ, October 13, 2010

On the morning of October 6, 2010, a training line of supercells developed in a north-south line from eastern Yavapai County through eastern Coconino County in northern Arizona. A total of 22 tornado warnings were issued by the National Weather Service, and storm reports confirm that at least 6 different tornadoes touched down. Damage paths were up to 30 miles long and produced up to EF3 damage.

Hardest hit was the small town of Bellemont, which is located about 10 miles west of Flagstaff on I-40. Coincidentally, two back-to-back tornadoes from two separate supercell thunderstorms plowed through the town within one hour of each other. The damage paths from these two tornadoes are less than one mile apart, and ironically the National Weather Service office is located between the two tornado paths. A freight train was hit by one of the tornadoes, toppling 28 of its cars. Also, an RV park and dealership and dozens of residences also sustained EF1 – EF2 damage.
