The Scheffer Farm Barns-Shirley
by Shirley Haden

The older barn was built in 1880, the big red horse barn was built in 1924.
We got to speak to the lady who owns this farm near Huson, Montana (yes it
Huson not Huston). She told us about her father being 6 years old when the
big red barn was built. The homestead has been in the family for 7 generations!

Okay now for the construction story! This is an odd looking barn, in case you
hadn't noticed. The guys (relatives and neighbors) misread the plans and they
made the barn about (I think she said) 5 feet taller than it was suppose to be.
Which made them have to refigure the roof and because of that, the interior of
the barn, up in the hay loft, you get to see the most wonderful upside down Noah's
Ark, or at least that is what it makes you think of. So, this barn is unlike any
other barn in the area.

I hope I got that info pretty right, because I was making quick notes as she was
telling us the story.

Elegant icon of a hardscrabble era. Foundation element of a family/community, a tradition, a culture.

A wonderful sense of history behind this great shot. The contrast between the building styles is so striking.

Beautiful building and beautiful story. I almost can see these men discussing about the plans and then scratching their heads when the barn was ended :oD
I like this bright red and the windows and doors outlined in white.
