Banded Iron - Not petrified wood! However it is important in earth's history, it dates to the Proterozoic Era, Paleoproterozoic Period 2500 - 1600 million years ago. It marks the beginning of aerobic metabolism and the oxidation or "rusting" of iron in banded oceanic iron sediment layers.
