We traveled through southeast Idaho today. It is not the end of the earth, but you can see it from there. We did have a couple cool stops: EBR-1 (experimental breeder reactor-1) and the Museum of Idaho in Idaho Falls. EBR-1 was the first breeder reactor and also the first reactor to be used for the generation of electricity. It operated in the '50s purely experimentally. On display outside were two immense machines which were tested as nuclear aircraft engines. The item pictured is HETR 3, which actually operated for almost 200 hours. The idea was to come up with an airplane that could stay airborne indefinitely. Well, the project was abandoned rather early on and no flight hardware was ever built. The EBR-1 site is very well maintained by the DOE. Good PR on the peacetime uses of atomic energy.

That's about right, Dave.

"Staying airborne indefinitely' sounds more militaristic than an example of peacetime use of atomic energy: airborne command posts, AWACS, etc.
