Turtle patrol finds a newborn loggerhead turtle

Longboat Key

Loggerhead turtles are endangered. For years they have emerged from their holes and followed the lights - towards the streets and buildings instead of the reflection of the moon on the water that would bring them to the ocean. Buildings near the beach have to keep their outdoor lights off near the ocean between May and November. Turtle patrols look for nests and mark them to protect them. They also check holes that have hatched for any eggs. This turtle was found deep in a hole trying to find its way out. They could not release him to the ocean or the birds would get him so they put him in a bucket and then would release him that night. The fellow running the patrol was nice enough to show him to my 8 year old daughter.
