Strait Street, Valletta. Once infamously known as “The Gut”, this street was the red light district of Valletta,
providing some of the less savoury services to visiting navies and service personnel from at least 1800 until
Malta became independent in 1964. After independence, the numbers of British and American servicemen on the
island declined dramatically and Strait Street closed down in the 1970s. Now becoming rather "yuppified"!
