We had a pretty leisurely day today traveling from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Sioux City, Iowa. It involved several crossings of the Missouri River. One of the more interesting stops was Fort Atkinson in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska. For us, it was interesting because Lewis and Clark camped there in August of 1804 and held a council with several Indian tribes. This sculpture is commemorating this meeting. They had quite a few of them during the whole outbound trip. Also at the site was Fort Atkinson. This US Army fort was built in 1820 on a site that Clark noted and was occupied with the 6th regiment for about eight years. It was the largest US Army fort at its time with about 1000 soldiers stationed there. It was out on the frontier and intended to protect American trade interests. Those pesky British were gumming up the works and inciting the Indians. During the day we had some heavy rain which, fortunately, occurred when we were driving or when we were already checked into the hotel. So far Kansas and Nebraska were new states for us. Tomorrow we go to South Dakota, also a new state.

Actually, it is a Newfoundland dog which belonged to Capt. Lewis.

Who did the Lion belong to.
The Indians or the British.

You did mention that there was a difference between the British and the English.

Damn those British.
Did I mention that I am English.
